Walking with God.

Silence & Solitude

“Be still, and know that I am God”
Psalm 46:10

In a high-tech, information-heavy, multi-media world of many voices, the counter-cultural practice of silence and solitude is a life-enhancer, even a life-saver. It is one of the habits of Jesus most prominently mentioned in the accounts of His life. Getting alone, getting quiet - intentionally, unhurriedly - in order to be with oneself and to be with God, is a vital way to stay emotionally alive and spiritually awake. In following Jesus’ example to set aside regular periods to be unplugged from the noise and others’ company, we allow time and space to hear the Father’s voice more clearly, to engage with Him in worship, in holy rest, in closer connection, in restoration of perspective, in health for body, mind and spirit.

Developing a habit of ‘Silence & Solitude’ is harder than it sounds, especially for some more active or extroverted personality types! Be patient and gentle with yourself! Don’t see it as something you ‘succeed’ or ‘fail’ in…..allow God to grow your capacity over time. It will be worth it!

First Steps

  1. Identify a time that works well for you - ideally when you’re fresh and rested.

  2. Identify a place that is as quiet and free from distraction as possible - some like comfy chairs and a candle, others prefer parks!

  3. Set a modest goal - perhaps 10 minutes, 2 or 3 times per week - with scope to grow!

  4. Put away all distractions, get comfortable, pay attention to your breathing.

  5. Welcome the Father and the peace, love and joy He wants you to enjoy.

  6. If you want, open your mind and imagination to listen for God’s voice, get something off your chest in prayer, give the clutter in your mind to the Father. The main aim is simply to “be with Jesus.” Don’t feel like you have to “do” anything. Relax and enjoy!
